Some people respond better to one-on-one tuition. I do this through the New Zealand Society of Authors (Pen Inc) or privately. This can work really well.

Usually the writer has already begun their manuscript and may be on to their second or even third draft. I like to see your work first and then, if possible, meet so we can discuss what we expect from each other. It is important that I am able to be completely honest with you, otherwise there is no point. I also have a writer friend who gives me feedback on my writing – and vice versa. If something doesn’t work a writer needs to know. A publisher won’t be kind. It is so difficult to be objective about your own work. Writing is hard work. Writing is rewriting. It often takes quite few drafts before your novel gets to a publishable standard!

I can work with you online or with the hard copy and if we can’t meet we can use the telephone. The current recommended mentoring rate is $50 an hour. You pay for several hours in advance (whatever you choose) and I’ll let you know when the hours have run out and you need to pay more. There is no payment for the initial meeting to see if we can work together. As soon as I begin reading, the work begins.
